What to expect from your cake smash session

Your session is designed to capture much more than just the cake.

We begin with some beautiful, clean portraits of your baby before introducing the cake, giving you a gorgeous mix of timeless first birthday photographs and all the messy, funny moments that follow.

Once the cake comes out, we let your little one take the lead.

Some babies dive straight in. Some carefully inspect every detail. Some need a little encouragement, and others are far more interested in escaping the set than eating cake!

There is no “right” way for a baby to cake smash. Their reactions and personalities are what make every gallery completely unique.

Then we have a bubble bath on the same set up where bub is encouraged to splash and have fun while getting all that cake mess off.

I absolutely adore themes for cake smashes! You can choose from the themes I have available or request your own. Im always up for a challenge!

What should you bring?

You don’t need to arrive with half the house packed!

Bring your usual nappy bag essentials, your baby’s change of outfit to go home in, sippy cup and snacks.

If your little one is particular about food, bringing a favourite snack can also be very handy for a little encouragement during the session.

And of course, bring your baby.

I’ll take care of the rest.

What if my baby doesn’t like the cake?

This is incredibly common, and completely okay.

Not every baby wants to dive headfirst into icing, especially when they’ve never experienced something quite like it before.

I’ll gently encourage them and give them plenty of time to explore at their own pace. Sometimes a favourite snack hidden behind the cake works wonders, sometimes we simply embrace their hilarious reactions, and sometimes the best photographs have very little cake smashing involved at all.

The goal is never to force a particular reaction.

The goal is to capture your baby exactly as they are at this age.

When should I book a cake smash?

Cake smash sessions are most commonly photographed around your baby’s first birthday, although they don’t need to happen on the exact day.

Many families choose to book slightly before their baby turns one so the photographs are ready to share for their birthday or display at their party.

Because cake smash sessions require planning and styling, booking in advance gives us the best opportunity to create the look you have in mind.
